An E.F. Payne 102H bamboo fly rod, 8′, 2-piece, 2-tip and built for what feels like a #5 or #6 line. The rod weighs 4.1 ounces on my scale. The “102-H” model designation can be found in faint script at the bottom of the hangtag. Fair condition with some varnish / bag issues, cracking to the guide wraps, some noticeable wear to the guides, and a grip that has been sandpapered. The balance of the rod is in original condition and that is fairly rare these days. The varnish has some heavy softening / bag imprint in areas and a few varnish chips with no penetration to the cane. Light flame and oven temper cane with typical Payne nodes. The main wraps are brown with yellow edges on all and a purple band at the keeper and male ferrules. The stripper is a red agate. Black snakes with some on the butt that have the oxide coating rubbed off. The ferrule fits are good and the rod is close to straight with a slight downward bend in both tips. The ferrules retain 90% of the original oxidation. The grip is 6 and done in a western profile with a hidden pocket cap. The uplock aluminum screwlock is stamped“Payne“ in cartouche and “Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.” and “Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, New York“. The rod packs into the original bag, with hangtag, and tube. The tube has green felt in the brass top and a dent in tube.
